Heartworm

Transmitted via mosquito bites to cats and dogs.

Heartworm live in the heart and blood vessels of the lungs.

Heartworm disease can lead to severe problems with the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, and can result in death.

 

Ticks

Latch onto your pet and are able to transmit several diseases.

Lyme disease can cause arthritis, swelling in joints, fever, loss of appetite, or kidney failure.

Anaplasmosis can cause fever, lethargy, or low platelet counts.

Ehrlichiosis can cause fever, lethargy, enlarged spleen, swollen lymphnodes, or low platelet counts.

 

Fleas

Latch onto your pet and are able to transmit several diseases.

Flea bites can cause skin irritations called flea allergy dermatitis.

Severe cases can cause anemia.

Your pet may ingest fleas, inadvertently, causing tapeworm infestation.

 

Internal Parasites

Tapeworm - Internal parasite that is most commonly ingested via fleas.

Hookworm - Internal parasite that attaches to the lining of the intestinal wall.  Most commonly infects through contact on soil and ingestion of feces.

Roundworm - Internal parasite that lives in the digestive system.  Mothers may pass them to young pets either before or after birth.  They are often ingested by young pets from the environment also.

Whipworm - Internal parasite that lives between the small and large intestine.  Pets become infected after they ingest eggs from the environment.
